Great Smoky
Mountain National Park
The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is a large national park
that straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains and the
Blue Ridge Mountains that border Western North Carolina and
Tennessee. Now one of the most visited national parks in the United
States, the Great Smoky National Park was created by President
Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940 and was designated as an International
Biosphere Reserve in 1976. With park entrances located along US Hwy
441 (Newfound Gap Road) and at the towns of Gatlinburg TN and
Cherokee NC, the Great Smoky National Park encompasses more than 814
square miles, making it one of the largest protected wilderness
regions in the Eastern United States. Known as a great place to
spend the day exploring hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing,
horseback riding and wildlife watching, the Great Smoky National
Park offers plenty to do in the outdoors.
